DS6 Digital Storytelling Festival – Friday 17 June – 10am – 4.30pm £20

The sixth anniversary of the Digital Storytelling Festival promises to inspire, encourage and show the exciting possibilities of digital storytelling.

Whether you work in education, the community or as an artist, this is your opportunity to share experiences, explore new creative ideas, see the latest technological developments, look at examples of best practise in the UK and worldwide and celebrate the growing significance of digital storytelling.

DS6 presents a jam packed day of inspirational speakers and practical sessions on every topic you can think of within the field of digital storytelling and some you hadn’t considered! All this plus a wide range of trade stands from the main funding organisations, community development schemes and many more and a unique opportunity to network with the digital storytelling community in Wales, the UK and beyond.

I am happy to announce that the DS6 International Digital Storytelling Festival will take place on:

at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Wales

We are still looking for your suggestions for our speaker and breakout sessions long list, the deadline for submissions is Monday 14th February. You can do so using the form on the main page of http://digstocymru.ning.com or the direct link to the form which is http://goo.gl/aBelk

As ever, we need all the help you can give, so if you are interested in volunteering your time and skills, either in the run up to the event, or on the day itself, please get in touch with me via the network e-mail or eskoreinikainen at gmail.com expressing how much time and what skills you can offer.

We are particularly interested in anyone who wants to help with the sponsorship team and as community managers for our online channels.

Storytelling in Wales and beyond… A message to all members of
Digital Storytelling Cymru Network Digital Storytellers!

It’s a new year, and that means time to get rolling with DS6 International
Digital Storytelling Festival! We’ve just opened the call for
speakers, and we would really like our amazing Digital Storytelling
diaspora who have been scouring the globe for interesting stories
to nominate those enlightened people they have come across during
the course of the year as our keynote speakers and breakout session
leaders. I’ve put a nomination form on the DS Cymru network’s main
page, so all you have to do is check in and let us know your
suggestions by filling the form in. But that is not all! The
quality and range of submissions will be dependent on how well the
network amplifies the message that the call is open. So please,
wherever you live online or offline, please spread the word!

It’s hard to evaluate the effect of a festival like DS5, but in my experience it is positively energising to meet with other practitioners, listen to the speakers and watch a fresh series of digital stories. We spend so much time working in isolation meeting very few people who really understand what we’re doing until we explain it to them it’s refreshing to discuss issues at DS5 where most people know exactly what you mean and can help you discover solutions.

At the end of the festival I poked my Sony Digicam in the face of a few delegates and asked them what it had meant to them. Without exception they also responded positively.

Good day at the Festival

There was lots of interest in the digistories table in the Marketplace which was ideally placed outside the main theatre entrance. I’ve tweeted from most of the sessions which gives you a flavour of how the day has gone, but now it’s time to have a drink and relax for the evening. I’ll update the blog with my observations and review on the train home tomorrow.

Are you Esko? No, but I know who he is – you must be on your way to DS5. I was talking to David Gunn – one of the guests and speakers at the Digital Storytelling Festival – we were standing on Aberystwyth Station. I had a message from Joe Lambert, of the Center for Digital Storytelling, that he wouldn’t need a lift to the Arts Centre as he was stopping off to meet a friend. That message to be delivered to Sophie or Esko. I was on the Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth train reading Story Circle, the new book edited by John Hartley and Kelly McWilliam, when Joe Lambert spotted me and came over to chat for a while, before disembarking to meet a friend before coming on to the festival.

So I hitched a lift with Esko and David and now I’m in my room and remembering how cell like these university “flats” are. But it’s cheap and convenient, the sun’s shining and I’ve survived here twice before. What’s more, this time there’s WiFi and 3g – so things have improved.

I’ll be trying to keep this blog updated throughout the festival.

I’m packing up my kit for the trip to West Wales for DS5, the UKs only Digital Storytelling Festival. This year I have taken a trade table on the top floor so drop by. Say hello, put your name on my mailing list, book a series of Training Trainers workshops – or just chat about whatever is on your mind. I’ll be the one in the very limited edition digistories T-Shirt. I’m looking forward to meeting old friends in Aberystwyth and making some new ones too.

I received this email a few days ago from Esko Reinikainen about the Digital Storytelling Festival in Aberystwyth next week. If you haven’t yet booked – there’s still time, but not a lot of it. I’ll be there and would love to see you there too. Look out for the digistories trade stand.

With an amazing line up including the inimitable Joe Lambert, continent straddling Diego Vidart, and a North Eastern flavour from Culture Shock, we are excited to be offering a day full of inspiring speakers, educational breakouts, and most importantly, the change to meet and network with other digital storytellers from the UK and beyond.

Have you registered for the conference yet? Please be aware that official registration is through the conference website and while you may have rsvp’d on the event pages on the ning network or the facebook group, you still need to make an official registration.

We would really appreciate if you could help us do a last push by emailing, forwarding, linking, and tweeting your networks like mad about the conference. Numbers are looking good so far, but we all know that the success of the event depends on the people who attend, and the more the merrier! All of the details about the conference and online registration can be found using this very simple webaddress http://dscymru.org.uk

There are also some opportunities for sponsorship left, so if you or anyone you know would like to have their message seen by our lovely audience, they can find details about the different sponsoship packages here.
